26th Annual Wine and Food Classic in Downtown Pensacola and Pensacola Beach

WSRE’s 26th Annual Wine and Food Classic: A “Bounty & Barrel” of fine wines, food and fun WSRE will present the 26th Annual Wine and Food Classic on Saturday and Sunday, October 18-19. This year’s “Bounty & Barrel” weekend includes three events for lovers of fine wines, gourmet food, music and public television. Guest celebrity chefs will be featured in Downtown Pensacola on Saturday, rhythm and blues diva Toscha Comeaux will perform Saturday evening at WSRE, and a “Biscuits ‘n Bubbly Brunch” will be served Sunday on Pensacola Beach. The “Southern Bounty Tasting” tents will be open Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Commendencia Slip downtown, featuring celebrity executive chefs Kevin Gillespie, Todd Richards and Duane Nutter, all from the Atlanta area, along with executive chefs from local restaurants serving up their own signature southern cuisine. For the perfect pairings, a variety of award-winning wines, presented by Republic National Distributing Company, will be served throughout the weekend of Wine and Food Classic events. Saturday’s cooking demonstrations by featured chefs are scheduled as follows: Richards from 11:30 a.m. to 12 p.m., Gillespie from 12:30 p.m. to 1 p.m., and Nutter from 1:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. Chef Kevin Gillespie: Gillespie is well-known as a top contender voted “fan favorite” on the sixth season of Bravo’s award-winning series “Top Chef,” and more recently he was Garden & Gun magazine’s featured chef at this year’s “Toast of the Town” event in Columbus, Ga. In 2013, he opened Gunshow, his restaurant in the Glenwood Park neighborhood of Atlanta. Gunshow earned the seventh spot on GQ magazine’s list of “12 Most Outstanding Restaurants” in February. Gillespie was named a semi-finalist for Rising Chef Star of the Year by the James Beard Foundation in 2012. During Saturday’s tasting event, Gillespie will be signing copies of his debut cookbook, “Fire in My Belly” (co-written with best-selling cookbook author David Joachim), which was named a 2013 James Beard Award Finalist in the Cookbooks: American Cooking category. Chef Todd Richards: Richards, executive chef at The Shed in Glenwood, opened his newest venture, The Pig & The Pearl, at Atlanta Station in August. In 2013, he was honored by the James Beard Foundation as a semi-finalist for Best Chef of the Southeast. Richards’ commitment to using naturally raised and grown ingredients is the cornerstone of his culinary philosophy. “In constructing a menu item, you have to have a direction, an understanding of the item you’re preparing. Where it came from, what kind of soil it grew in. That’s how dishes start to make sense,” said Richards in an interview with Deep South Magazine. Chef Duane Nutter: Nutter worked as opening consultant for the initial launch of One Flew South, a restaurant offering upscale travel-dining in Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. He now serves as executive chef, managing and directing daily operations. Nutter has been praised in a variety of publications including Garden & Gun, Men’s Journal, Delta Sky Magazine, Condé Nast Traveler and Details. In addition to his culinary talents, he has a knack for standup comedy and is also known as Atlanta’s hilarious “Mad Chef.” Both Richards and Nutter have competed on the Food Network’s “Iron Chef America,” have cooked at the prestigious James Beard House in New York and are James Beard Foundation members. Following the tasting tents event downtown, the Wine and Food Classic continues Saturday evening at the WSRE Amos Performance Studio with a reception, live auction and performance by Toscha Comeaux and Friends. The “Grand Bounty Reception” will feature culinary creations by Chef Irv Miller of Jackson’s. Comeaux, an R&B and jazz diva from Jacksonville Beach, will be belting out hits from the 60s, 70s and 80s by artists like Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Chaka Kahn, The Temptations, Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight and others. Doors open at 6:30 for the reception, and the show will begin at 8 p.m. Like last year, the Wine and Food Classic will be capped off with the “Biscuits ‘n Bubbly” Sunday brunch prepared by Chef Dan Dunn of H2O Asian Cajun Grill at the Hilton Pensacola Beach Gulf Front. Brunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tickets are on sale now at wsre.org/WineandFood. Admission prices are $65 for Saturday’s “Southern Bounty Tasting,” $100 for the “Grand Bounty Reception” and concert, and $75 for Sunday’s “Biscuits ‘n Bubbly Brunch.” All proceeds benefit the mission of WSRE, PBS for the Gulf Coast. Gov't Mule @ Saenger Theatre

GOV'T MULE Tue, October 7, 2014 7:00 pm Saenger Theater Pensacola Pensacola, FL   Gov't Mule Links The leaders of Gov't Mule, Warren Haynes and Allen Woody, should be well known to Allman Brothers fans for their stint in Southern rock's most famous native sons. In 1989, Haynes became the second replacement for Duane Allman, providing a good foil for Gregg Allman and Dickey Betts on guitar and vocals; Woody filled out the Allman sound on bass. Five years after their debut, the duo joined drummer Matt Abts in the side project Gov't Mule, a band in which the Allman Brothers' influence is apparent but complicated with the psychedelic, bluesy power trio feel of Cream. Gov't Mule debuted in 1995 with a self-titled album on Capricorn Records, followed by the stellar concert date Live at Roseland Ballroom. The studio follow-up, Dose, appeared in early 1998; another concert set, Live...with a Little Help from Our Friends, followed a year later, with the complete show appearing as a four-disc limited-edition set. A new studio effort, Life Before Insanity, appeared in early 2000. A vital member of the band was lost, however, on August 26, 2000, when Woody was found dead in a hotel room in New York City. The band had been preparing to record their next album, and after a time, Gov't Mule finally decided to carry on with the project, this time with guest bassists ranging from Flea to Bootsy Collins. The two-volume Deep End series for ATO Records resulted. Phish bassist Mike Gordon also got involved in the project, filming the recording of the albums for a planned documentary. In mid-September 2001, the group hit the road for a six-week tour in support of Deep End, Vol. 1; Oteil Burbridge filled in as bassist for most of the dates. The second volume of Live...with a Little Help from Our Friends appeared in 2002 and the Deepest End: Live in Concert CD and DVD in 2003. One year later saw the release of Déjà Voodoo, Gov't Mule's first studio effort sinceWoody's death. It featured his official replacement, bassist Andy Hess, as well as new keyboardist Danny Louis. The same lineup released High & Mighty in 2006. The two-volume Benefit Concert series followed in 2007. In 2009,Gov't Mule issued By a Thread, its first studio album in three years. Hess was replaced by bassist Jorgen Carlsson, and the album featured a guest appearance by ZZ Top guitarist Billy Gibbons. In 2010, the Evil Teen imprint issued Mulennium, a three-disc package that commemorated Gov't Mule's complete 1999 New Year's Eve concert at Atlanta's historic Roxy Theatre with the band's original lineup. The concert also included guest appearances by the Black Crowes, Little Milton, and Audley Freed. After an extended recording break in which Haynes recorded his first solo album, Gov't Mule returned to the studio. Shout was issued in September of 2013. It contained 11 new songs, and was accompanied by a bonus disc that featured a host of guest vocalists (including Toots Hibbert, Jim James, Dr. John, Steve Winwood, and Elvis Costello) fronting the band on different versions of the same tracks.
